Brain Plasticity and Lifestyle Behaviors

Posted on 2012-05-22 09:02:44

The title of this journal article pretty much says it all: The impact of diet and exercise on brain plasticity and disease. [Pinilla FG, Nutr Health. 2006;18(3):277-84]

"Lifestyle involves our preference to engage in behaviors that can remarkably influence the fitness level of our body and brain. Dietary factors are a powerful means to influence brain function on a daily basis. Equally impressive is the action of exercise on cognitive function as documented by studies showing that exercise enhances learning and memory."

Brain plasticity refers to the capability of the brain to lay down new neuronal pathways, make new connections - in other words, the brain's function is improved at every stage of life when a healthy diet and exercise are a not only part of your lifestyle, but they areyour lifestyle.

"A growing body of scientific evidence indicates that exercise has a positive impact on human health, including neurological health. Aerobic exercise, which is supposed to enhance cardiovascular functions and metabolism, also induces neurotrophic factors that affect hippocampal neurons, thereby improving spatial learning and memory." [Cassilhas RC, et al Spatial memory is improved by aerobic and resistance exercise through divergent molecular mechanisms. Neuroscience 2012 Jan 27; 202:309-317]

"Symptomatic Whack-a-Mole"

Posted on 2012-04-30 16:44:14

"Symptomatic Whack-a-Mole"                 -thank you to the Weekly Sticky

The object of the carnival game Whack-a-Mole is to use a mallet to hit as many critters as possible when they pop up in random succession.  Trouble is, as you hit one mole, three more pop up and disappear before you can nail them all.  Whack-a-Mole is a perfect metaphore for how people are medicated today.  Unfortunatley in this game you end up on a tone of drugs, for a bunch of problems, with no actual improvement in your health.

According to a NCHS Data brief by the CDC, over the last 10 years the percentage of Americans who took at least one prescription in the past month increased from 44% to 48%.  The use of two or more drugs increased from 25% to 31%.  The use of five or more drugs increased from 6% to 11%.  Yet despite taking all these drugs, the US embarassingly ranks 37th among the world's industrial counties when it comes to overall health.

For Chiropractors, health is not defined by how many symptoms you can temporarily 'whack away' with drugs, but how well your body can adapt to its environment and heal under its own innate abilities.  You have more healing intelligence in your little finger than all the doctors and pharmacies in the world put together.  Bid Pharma doesn't believe so, but Chiropractors do. Keep your Nerve System clear and your won't have to play their failing game.

Your children can grow up healthy and prescription drug free.  Call me and get started down that road today.  (973) 252-6040

Chiropractic Care and the Nervous System

Posted on 2012-04-30 07:59:34

Many people who have never visited a doctor of chiropractic assume that chiropractic is soley concerned with muscles and bones (musculoskeletal issues).  But chiropractors also focus on the vitality of the nervous system.  In fact chiropractic care's influence on the nervous system may account for much more profound health benefits than mere relief and prevention of musculoskeletal conditions.

By removing interference to the nervous system called vertebral subluxation, I have had great results helping patients control and eliminate their migraine headaches.  Every year patients come in and tell me this is the first year they didn't need their allergy medications.

Could Chiropractic help your nervous system?  The nervous system controls all body functions from breathing to heartbeat to muscle activity.  It regulates the immune system and the emotional response to stress.  Why gamble with such a vital system?  Call us today and schedule an appointment for a chiropractic checkup.

It happened again Friday night, and it drives me crazy!

Posted on 2009-06-14 14:26:23

I have been in practice in Randolph for over ten years now and I have many patients that are still under wellness care from year one.  As you can imagine I have seen a lot of people come and go.  People leave for various reasons.  I have to go play with my puppy so I'll get to the point.

Friday night I ran into Bill.  Bill stopped coming in because his pain was gone and Medicare stopped picking up his copay.  He still had unlimited insurance coverage but he didn't want to pay anything out of his pocket.  Anyway, last year Bill had back surgery.  He showed me the scar where they cut him open in the front, pulled out his intestines and fused his spine.  He said if he knew how painful it was going to be he would never have done it.  I tried and tried to explain that his health came from his spine and only 10% of the nerves are for pain and the other 90% are for body function.  I didn't bother telling him that this would have never happened if he stuck with getting adjusted....what's the point now.

Stay under chiropractic care for life so you don't wind up like Bill.
